Tips for Staying Safe and Cool in Summer

Summer is nearly here and with the weather starting to warm up, it’s a good time to consider the risk that seniors may face when spending time outdoors in the sun. Let’s explore some helpful tips for staying cool and protected during the summer months.

Don’t forget to remind seniors to apply extra sun protection, especially if they spend extended periods outdoors.

Stay Hydrated

During the summer months, it’s so important to drink as much water as you can to stay hydrated. Seniors are less aware of their first, so pay attention to early signs of dehydration and make sure you listen to your body and drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Aim for at least two litres of water which is about six to eight glasses.

Limit Your Time Outdoors

Summer temperatures peak between 10 am and 4 pm. To stay safe, plan outdoor activities before or after these hours. Limiting exposure during the hottest part of the day helps reduce the risk of heat-related issues.

Watch for Heat-Related Illness

As we age, our bodies become less tolerant of extreme heat. Seniors, in particular, are at higher risk for heat-related illnesses. Recognize early warning signs, including dry skin, dizziness, a high body temperature, and a flushed face. Prevent progression by having water on hand, using cold compresses, or moving to a cooler area.

By following these summer safety tips, you can enjoy the beauty of the season while safeguarding your health. Whether you’re a senior yourself or caring for a loved one, a little precaution goes a long way in ensuring a safe and enjoyable summer.
